Building Improvements
At 100 Years Old
Even a Building Needs Some Help
Now, after 100 years of kids learning in it’s hollowed walls our school building needs some major TLC. A dedicated group of volunteers are working on a long list of maintenance and face-lift projects to bring the school up to par. However, we do have six projects that will cost some real money. Any and all financial help with these projects would be welcomed by the students, teachers, administers and parents. Your tax deductible donates can go to the general repair funds or for specific repairs. Without your support many of these projects will not be realized this summer.
Our goal is to have all of these projects completed by the opening of the 2010 - 2011 school year in late August.
Boiler Repair the current boiler is leaking in the tunnel below the building with cold water being piped directly to the boiler. We will replace the bottom of the boiler, fix the holes in the pipe and replace the cold water lines. Our estimated cost is $20,000.
Radiators heat cannot be controlled causing severe temperature differences throughout the school. The steam traps in most of the building are broken, plugged or disconnected and must be repaired. Our estimated cost is $10,000.
Roof Repair The roofs above the library, school and garage are leaking. The roof joints above the gym are deteriorating. The library and boiler room roofs need to be replaced while the school and gym roofs can be repaired. Our estimated costs are $20,300 for the library, $5,800 for the school, $13,000 for the boiler room and $6,900 for the gym.
Third Floor Insulation The ceiling above the third floor had no insulation. We will be installing energy efficient insulation for a cost of $10,000
Building Exterior Bricks and mortar are deteriorating as concrete is falling apart. We will tuckpoint and repair the concrete. Our estimates are $40,000.
Donations for these projects can be sent to St. Thomas Aquinas, 2100 Main Street, Marinette, WI 54143. Please note the funds are to be used for CCHS building maintenance. Keep updated on the repairs by visiting our website www.thomas-aquinas.org and click on the Academy button followed by Building Improvements.
Additional smaller maintenance needs include repair of the following: broken windows, exterior door latches, replacement of electrical outlets in the gym, cracked floor tiles in classrooms, ventilation of the locker rooms, improve lighting in the building, recoat floors, paint stairwell handrails, general landscaping and parking lot maintenance. Volunteers will be working this summer to get these off of the “honey-do” list. If you have expertise in any of these areas or would be willing to give a hand please contact Eric Bulin at ericbulin@centurytel.net
